Paris by the Night

May 13th 2008 10:56
Beauty, Love and Lights is what I was told to expect about Paris, and after ten minutes of arriving in the city it was what I came to find out. Beauty and Love was for the iconic sights and Lights was for the glittering Eiffel Tower and the Rubies and Diamonds of the Champs Elysés. By rubies and diamonds, I mean the car lights travelling each way in front of the Arc de Triomphe,

As you can tell, I arrived at night time and after stopping at my hotel, The Holiday Inn, I ventured to the Place de la Concorde to view the amazing lights on offer in Paris. The Place de la Concorde was the largest public square in Paris, where the execution of the French Revolution took place. Despite its grim past, it has an amazing view of the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and the Arc de Triomphe.

I made my way across (walked) to the Peace Monument in front of Eiffel Tower to experience a light show I was told about by a guest at my hotel. It was amazing! But I couldn’t wait until the next day so I could actually climb one of the world’s most recognisable monuments.

The next day rolled over and I took the train it into the tourist region to see all the sights in the day-light. My first task was lining up and climbing the Eiffel Tower. Luckily it was a cold morning and the lines weren’t very long. I made my way to the top and it was unbelievable! I could see all sites, from the gold dome of Napoleon’s Tomb to Notre Dame Cathedral in the distance.

After the climb, I took a train to the Arc de Triomphe. I climbed my way to the top and could see the 13 roads leading out of the great Arc. I spent a fair bit of time on the top looking at all the near misses of car accidents around the round-about. By now I was really tired, but I had one more thing to do, that was to walk down the Champs of Elyses and make my way over to Notre Dame Cathedral.

This was the highlight of my day, seeing the gothic style gargoyles and angels that lined the roof top. I walked in the cathedral and stared at the glass-stained windows for a while before committing myself to climb the Bell Tower. It was a gruelling walk, but at the top I got to knock on the Bell, despite a telling off by the security guard.
MonaLisa

My day in Paris had ended, but my second night had just began. I decided to go along and see the world famous Moulin Rogue. It was an interesting show, which came with a traditional Parisian meal.

The next day, I decided it was time I went to the Louvre. The Louvre originated as a palace during the Capetian dynasty under the reign of Philip II and more recently was converted into one of the most famous museums in the world. After arriving, I immediately found my way to the Mona Lisa. It was not as small as what I had been told and after getting my shot with it (again at the disapproval of security) I explored what the museum had to offer.

Three hours later and I had hardly made a dent in seeing all the items in the Louvre. I have since been told that even if you spent one minute viewing each painting in the museum, it would take nine months!
