Lucerne: A True Post Card
May 14th 2008 12:01
Today, im posting in reverse order. The Top 10 things to do in Lucerne, SwitzerlandSwitzerland described in a sentence, “clear lakes, snow caped mountains, cheese fondue and chocolate”. Not much more needs to be said. Switzerland is not a land of contrast, but a land of scenic beauty. The culture is unique and the people, despite what some say, are very, very friendly. Most tourists visit Zurich, but I wanted to visit a town a bit smaller, so I decided on Lucerne.
Lucerne is a picture book perfect. It is smallish city at the foot of the Swiss Alps, with a large crystal clear lake. The main part of the city actually surrounds the water. I woke up early in the morning and the day was clear so I ventured outside to find a coffee shop. By the time I walked down the street, I was already taken in by the sights of boutique chocolate and cheese shops.
Despite its size Lucerne had plenty to do. In the late morning I decided to travel to the Picasso Museum where I had a gander at some amazing art works. After that, I went across to the Lion Monument. The lion monument was really moving and after reading up about it really put a lot of things into perspective. The Lion Monument was created in honour of the Swiss Guards whom lost their lives protecting King Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette during the French Revolution. A mob of working-class Parisians stormed the palace and more than 700 Swiss officers and soldiers died while defending the palace.
After spending quite a while at the monument, I went on search of some lunch. I looked for some cheese fondue and I found the perfect place, “The Fondue Palace”. I absolutely engorged myself on all you can cheese. It was a taste sensation!
After a long lunch, I took a cable car up Mount Pilatus in search for Dragons. Legend goes that there have been a number of dragon sightings on top of the mountain. It was freezing, but at the top it was clear and you could see to the horizon of lakes and mountains. Lucerne in many aspects is a true post card!
